IAC – In Perspective of a Multidisciplinary Educational Institute

Overview

In many ways, today’s young adults are more aware, decisive, and responsible for their futures. Beyond schooling, as students step into the world of higher education, it becomes the duty of modern universities to have an educational arena that fosters discovery, and growth, and most of all, keeps the flame of interest eternally ignited.

All this and much more can be achieved through a multidisciplinary approach. But coming from times when academic departments don’t speak to each other, opportunities are unknown, and access is scarce, it is first important to understand what exactly this possibility of a multidisciplinary education is.

What is Multidisciplinary Education

Education is a complex world with many styles, values, and philosophies. When it comes to choosing what’s right for you, it’s important to take the time to figure out what kind of system fits your learning style. Especially if you’re the one paying for it. You have the amazing opportunity to choose your path; what direction will you take?

Multidisciplinary learning is a wonderful way to integrate your education into a comprehensive unit rather than scrambling to draw connections between seemingly unrelated parts. It empowers you to see tangible correlations across subject matters rather than view each in a silo.

The world isn’t segmented into perfectly contained blocks, and your education shouldn’t be either! The benefits of a multidisciplinary approach to education are plentiful! Could it be what you’ve been searching for?

Multidisciplinary learning at IAC

Multidisciplinary learning is not your average school experience. A multidisciplinary curriculum is one in which a single topic is studied from the viewpoint of more than one discipline. Educational Institutions like Institute for Art and Culture (IAC) realize the advantages of multidisciplinary education and have gone above and beyond to integrate it into their education platform.

If you need some multidisciplinary examples to better understand, think about a bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design. Instead of just studying courses related to Fashion, you would have professors from other degree programs such as Textile Design and Graphics Design each drawing on their specialty to provide a well-rounded understanding of the subject matter. (i.e., the professors from multiple backgrounds and specializations cross-pollinate their teachings, so you have a better understanding of how several connected domains of knowledge work together in the grand scheme of things.)

Here at IAC, the multidisciplinary approach relies on people crossing disciplines to share knowledge, thereby enhancing your scope and depth of learning.

Impact of Multidisciplinary learning on Student Outcomes at IAC

Holistic understanding

One of the benefits of a multidisciplinary approach in education is you get a more holistic understanding of the world. Rather than looking at individual departments and their subject matters separately, a multidisciplinary approach integrates parts of each department into the study programs of the other.

For example, the Institute for Art and Culture weaves Information Technology and Animation Design into the Game Design and Development program and looks at Game Design and Development Program as part of the Digital and Cinematic Arts.

Different perspectives

Have you ever been trying to solve a puzzle by yourself and have one section that completely defeats you? You stare at it for hours but can’t figure it out for the life of you. Then, one day, a friend saunters by and picks up that pivotal piece and places it perfectly. Ah, the magic of different perspectives!

A multidisciplinary approach at IAC is kind of like that. With different professors integrating subject matters, you get the perspective of one professor on a single knowledge domain and a different perspective from the other professor on the next day. It opens the doors to different ideas and ways of understanding.

Real-world approach

At IAC, multidisciplinary learning isn’t just an educational philosophy—it’s a tangible way of understanding the world. When you graduate, you’ll be working with people from across multiple disciplines. Being able to compile and collaborate with people from across the spectrum will help you function in the professional world.

Collaboration skills

Hopefully, any education route you take emphasizes the importance of collaboration. However, one of the most important advantages of a multidisciplinary curriculum is the idea of coming together to create a better whole.

Being able to communicate effectively with people across disciplines is integral to multidisciplinary learning. At IAC, You learn the same vocabulary, you understand their values, and you know what motivates them. These skills will help you make connections, solve big problems, and work synergistically with your peers.

Studying at IAC – Being Cherished Abroad

Multidisciplinary learning will make your degree abroad even more valuable! The benefits of a multidisciplinary approach to education are clear. By melding together subjects, you’re connecting the brightest minds. Having people across disciplines work together creates a harmonious, integrated approach to learning. Multidisciplinary learning programs may not be very common, but that’s part of what makes them special at IAC.

Consciously breaking down boundaries between disciplines, students can take up courses from different schools. This means the breadth and depth of university education are tremendously enhanced. The most effective universities are always multidisciplinary.

Cross-listing courses across multiple schools at IAC sets the tone for truly multidisciplinary education. Students are required to choose electives for credits. This not only exposes students to new and diverse disciplines, concepts, thoughts, or perspectives, but also helps them discover what interests them, and how to link their specialized areas of study to other variables.

Higher education is not only about gaining advanced knowledge of disciplines, but also learning more about yourself, discovering your interests, nurturing your passions, channeling your talents, challenging yourself and growing as a student, individual, and member of society

Diversity in Career Choices after Graduating from IAC

At the end of the day, the real world is complex. Phenomena are complex. You simply cannot understand it through one lens. A rounded, holistic perception is key. An inevitable outcome of looking at life and learning through a multidisciplinary lens is the ability to approach problems with a broader perspective.

For a student who is studying at IAC, for instance, the course on ‘Game Design & Development’ offered by the School of Digital and Cinematic Art (SDCA)—which combines the subjects of Game Design, Animation, and Information Technology—this crossing over and coming together of disciplines trains the mind to join the dots between many aspects of a problem. You begin to think out of the box. You can draw from a range of concepts, disciplines, and perspectives to identify the best integrated solutions to today’s problems that are themselves multifaceted.

New roles are being carved out with the changing times—and in an era of exponential change and development, an undiscovered future awaits young Pakistan. Even recruits are on the lookout for hiring multidisciplinary talent. Narrow training is giving way to transferrable and dynamic skills. Through a multidisciplinary approach, a student gains an arsenal of skills—problem-solving, critical thinking, time-management, self-management, communication and writing, analysis and research methodologies, teamwork, and much more—that are easily transferable across work environments.

Youngsters can now find very interesting careers in new and emerging fields as a result of a vibrant multidisciplinary background. It gives them the exposure, education, and experience to branch out into different directions and expands their avenues.
